Frances Barbour

Frances started bike commuting during her college years, which began her love affair with active transportation, cycling, and staying fit.  She then started road riding for recreation in her native Washington, DC.  Mountain biking followed when she moved to San Francisco in 1992.  Her career in International Relations led to a passion for linking transportation and the environment in the United States, and inspired her to teach cycling to enable others.

“I make the entire process fast, fun, and feasible – brains won’t learn if they are scared or bored. I guarantee my clients effective, transformative, and tangible results!"

Frances worked with Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) for 3 years as Outreach Coordinator and then for 7 years as Lead Instructor for MCBC's Safe Routes to Schools ("SR2S") program, focusing on pedestrian & bike safety for elementary school children.  In 2006 she earned her national certification as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) through the League of American Bicyclists (LAB).  She has developed and led family biking workshops, SR2S assemblies, after-school bike clubs for 3rd-4th-5th graders, and clinics specifically for women and retirees.  Since 2012 Frances has offered private lessons for individuals and groups of all ages in the Bay Area.  She is also is on the instructor staff for San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Napa County Bicycle Coalition.

When not teaching cycling, Frances is an Au Pair Coordinator and an editor.  She also enjoys long distance swimming, cooking, singing, speaking French and Spanish, and racing sailboats.
