Wynn Kageyama

My journey toward becoming a better cyclist began in early 2000 with my involvement in the Major Taylor Cycling Club of  East Palo Alto.  My work and that of my colleagues earned Commendations from the County of San Mateo.

I discovered the book Effective Cycling, which explains how to safely and confidently operate as part of everyday traffic.  It was written by John Forester, who created the League of American Bicyclists (LAB)'s nationwide cycling education program, now called Smart Cycling.  When East Bay Bicycle Coalition (now Bike East Bay) held Smart Cycling classes, my wife encouraged me to sign up.  Robert Raburn, then EBBC's Executive Director, recommended that I become a LAB Cycling Instructor (LCI).  Before completing my certification I had developed a program to teach 18-total-hour Road Cycling classes at Castro Valley Adult School through my own company Ventana EDU.

I currently teach through Bike Silicon Valley, Wheel Kids Bicycle Club, and Bicycle Solutions, and am the Cycling Education Chair of Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club (FFBC).  I am the organizer of Fix Your Bike Day through FFBC and Bike Fremont, and have held free repair clinics with an Earn-a-Bike component for participants who learn bike maintenance.  I also publish cycling videos on YouTube

"Cycling is fun when you do it properly" -- John Forester

When not teaching cycling, I enjoy "cyclo-camping" (self-contained camping by bike), and have completed the strenuous clockwise Big Sur loop through upper Carmel Valley.  As a bio-intensive "mini-farmer", I use the hugelkulture technique to grow fresh vegetables for the Viola Blythe Community Center, delivering 30 pounds every week by bike.
