Bicycle riding has been a central theme of nearly all my activities. Working, studying, traveling, playing – why not get there by or do it on or in some way incorporate a bike?! Of course I appreciate how important bicycling is to making the world a better place – from GHG reduction to safer streets to health benefits – but I’ll admit my primary motivation to ride is because it’s fun. I can’t imagine a more liberating, invigorating, self-empowering, and altogether joyful way of getting around than riding a bike. I’m not a racer, but I enjoy going fast, taking on the challenges of climbs and descents, working out technical sections, and covering a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time. It’s true what they say: you seldom see a cyclist without a smile on their face!
As a cycling instructor my goal is to share this joy with students. In 2010 I founded Wheel Kids Bicycle Club as an “adventure and exploration destination for kids.” Whether leading kids or directing staff, my motto for discovery was if you see a trail, take it. This was a more popular motto than the other one I’d propose now and then: always take the hard way. Either way, the goal is to get on your bike and explore the world.
I’ve taught hundreds of children to ride and improve their skills, and under my direction thousands of kids have done the same. My teaching specialties include learn-to-ride for kids and adults, fundamental skills development, safe street cycling, mountain biking essentials, and cyclist etiquette. I was certified as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI #3465) in 2012, have coached with NICA’s NorCal league, and have developed my own methods and curricula through Wheel Kids. My preferred lessons location is Polo Field south in Golden Gate Park, but I'm open to other SF locations and some in southern Marin and the northern Peninsula.
Come ride with me.
